The Texas A&M Health Science Center Institute of Biosciences and Technology in Houston has played a pivotal role in improving the quality of health care through education and advanced, innovative molecular research in bioscience and medicine. The center is an 11-story research tower on the South Main campus of the Texas Medical Center. The Margaret M. Alkek Center for Environmental and Genetic Medicine is on the building’s fourth floor was also named in honor of Mrs. Alkek. Scientists are focused on the complex interactions between environmental agents and their impact on human health and genetics. The Albert B. Alkek Institute of Biosciences and Technology provides a bridge between investigators and scientists, and encourages the transfer of discoveries made in the laboratories to the marketplace so the institute’s research results can help people.

 

Our project was an 18,000 sf laboratory build out of the unfinished 4th floor. The buildout matched the laboratory layout of the other floors: 1/3 offices; 2/3 lab. The offices anchor the east and west, stepped ends of the building, while the labs stack in the main core of the building. Specialized labs and lab service spaces occupy the interior core between the elevators, while more open /teaching labs line the windows. Each of the 4 main labs have their own refrigerated storage units. ADA upgrades were made to public spaces through out the building, in order to update them to meet current standards.
